ECDC published a rapid risk assessment concerning this event on 6 December 2017 and a joint ECDC-EFSA Rapid Outbreak Assessment was published on 22 March 2018.First update available online on the ECDC website

Rapid risk assessment: emergence of resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae
Date of publication: 13 June 2018This risk assessment covers Ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) resistance in brief, reviews the recent literature reporting resistance of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae to CAZ-AVI, and assesses the risk for the EU/EEA countries. It outlines options for appropriate detection of resistance and the correct and timely implementation of infection prevention and control measures to prevent spread of these highly resistant organisms within healthcare settings and across borders.Available from the ECDC website

Rapid risk assessment: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae
Date of publication: 7 June 2018Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections are associated with high mortality, primarily due to delays in administration of effective treatment and the limited availability of treatment options. New antibiotics capable of replacing carbapenems for their main indications are not likely to become available in the near future. CRE are adapted to spread in healthcare settings as well as in the community, and measures should address both routes of transmission. This update of the 2016 ECDC Rapid Risk Assessment on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) evaluates the risk for patients and healthcare systems in EU/EEA countries due to the global spread of CRE.First update available online on the ECDC website

Strategy for the external quality assessment of public health microbiology laboratories
Date of publication: 30 July 2018ECDC’s Microbiology Coordination Section developed a multi-disease ECDC’s strategy for cost-efficient design and management of ECDC EQAs. ECDC does not operate its own laboratories; instead, the Centre opted for a network approach and relies upon the microbiological capacity and capability in EU/EEA Member States. ECDC commissions and supports EQA schemes across public health microbiology laboratories in the EU/EEA countries to: verify the quality and comparability of surveillance data reported at EU/EEA level; and to support threat detection capabilities for emerging and epidemic diseases or antimicrobial resistance.Available from the ECDC website

Date of publication: 23 July 2018This ECDC study protocol describes the technical requirements for implementing future EU-level genomic-based surveillance of carbapenem-resistant and/or colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. It builds upon and synthesises evidence and the opinion of experts in Member States and at ECDC compiled since 2014. The protocol was updated in July 2018 with minor changes to certain definitions and incorporates feedback received during a consultation with national technical coordinators at the inaugural meeting for the survey in November 2017.Available from the ECDC website

Systematic review on the prevention and control of blood-borne viruses in prison settings
Date of publication: 23 July 2018Compared with the general public, people in prisons have a higher prevalence of infection with blood-borne viruses (BBVs) such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). This is recognised as a major issue for the health of people in prisons, as well as the general population, because the majority of people who have been incarcerated will subsequently return to their communities. This report is a systematic review on prevention and control of BBVs in prison settings, with a focus on the countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).Available from the ECDC website

The main aim of the collection is to provide information on the distribution of the following vector groups: mosquitoes, sandflies, biting midges and ticks. The sampling protocols in this document also present methods (where possible) for data collection related to abundance and cover various aspects of the ecology, behaviour and vector status of the target species. The protocols were validated in the field in 2015.Available from the ECDC website
