Monitoring the use of whole-genome sequencing in infectious disease surveillance in Europe 2015–2017 Date of publication: 18 September 2018 The results of the survey presented in this report showed that by mid-2017 the vast majority of national public health reference laboratories in EU/EEA countries had access to whole genome sequencing (WGS) based typing of diverse microbial pathogens for investigations of infection and drug resistance transmission. WGS provides higher resolution and accuracy than classical molecular typing methods contributing to a better understanding of infectious disease and drug resistance transmission patterns and thereby improving the effectiveness of interventions for their control.Available from the ECDC website |
Generic protocol on enhanced surveillance for invasive pneumococcal disease at the EU/EEA level Date of publication: 12 September 2018 The current generic protocol proposes a uniform approach for active invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) surveillance in children and enhanced surveillance in other age groups. Public health authorities can adapt the generic protocol to meet their specific needs. The document covers the description of the public health importance of IPD and rationale for surveillance, surveillance objectives, case identification, data collection, monitoring indicators and feedback and supervision.Available from the ECDC website |
