Risk assessment for seasonal influenza, EU/EEA, 2017–2018 Date of publication: 20 December 2017Since the 2009 influenza pandemic, ECDC has regularly produced early-season risk assessments for EU/EEA countries to inform national public health authorities of key features during the ongoing season. The main objectives of the early season risk assessment are to provide an early description of the epidemiological pattern of seasonal influenza in the first affected countries; to anticipate the progression of influenza activity and to assess the risk of reduced vaccine effectiveness and susceptibility to neuraminidase inhibitors. Multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to Polish eggs Date of publication: 12 December 2017This document provides an assessment of the public health risk associated with a multi-country outbreak ofSalmonella Enteritidis in the EU/EEA, which is epidemiologically and microbiologically linked to contaminated eggs from Poland. Testing through whole genome sequencing (WGS) shows the isolates are part of four distinct but related genetic clusters. ECDC and EFSA are liaising with relevant authorities in the affected EU/EEA countries and the European Commission to facilitate the coordination of investigation and response measures. Multi-country outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes PCR serogroup IVb, MLST ST6 Date of publication: 8 December 2017A multi-country outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes PCR serogroup IVb, MLST ST6 has been ongoing in the EU/EEA since at least 2015. Twenty-six cases from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom have been classified as a confirmed microbiological cluster on the basis of whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis, including core genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based analysis, depending on the country. Expert opinion on the introduction of the meningococcal B (4CMenB) vaccine in the EU/EEA Date of publication: 6 December 2017The multicomponent meningococcal B (4CMenB) vaccine Bexsero for the prevention of serogroup B invasive meningococcal disease (SgB IMD) has been available in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) since 2013. Meningococcal serogroup B (SgB) is the most common cause of IMD in all age groups at the aggregated EU/EEA level. SgB IMD predominantly affects infants and young children and is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity related to IMD in children under five years of age. Available from the ECDC website |

As of week 48/2017 nearly 3 000 influenza detections have been reported across the WHO European Region.
