Plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in Enterobacteriaceae Date of publication: 15 June 2016 The recently recognised global distribution of a self-transferable plasmid-borne colistin resistance gene (mcr-1) poses a substantial public health risk to the EU/EEA. This document assesses the risk for the patients and healthcare systems in the EU/EEA due to the global mcr-1 plasmid-mediated gene epidemic and reviews the options for strengthening laboratory-based surveillance and for mitigating further epidemic dissemination of mcr-1-positive MDR strains of Enterobacteriaceae in healthcare facilities. Systematic review on the incubation and infectiousness/shedding period of communicable diseases in children Date of publication: 2 June 2016 To support the development of a European Union (EU) approach to the control of communicable diseases in schools or other childcare settings, a systematic literature review was performed for the incubation period, shedding, and infectiousness for predefined disease categories. These findings have implications for the temporary school exclusion of children with an infectious disease. They provide evidence essential for public health action, such as the minimum period required for a school leave, and provide the evidence base for a guidance on the exclusion-making process.
